Vegetative filter strips (VFSs) are areas of land that have been planted with vegetation in order to intercept and slow down runoff water, capture eroded soil, and increase surface water infiltration. Vegetative filter strips can be planted in many widths or sizes and with a variety of grass or forage species.

This publication outlines the benefits of VSFs and discusses research done to assess the usefulness of VSFs specifically at the ends of row crops irrigated by rills or furrows.
